Designer Software: Lutron

Problem & Results

I was brought in by The Team W for a 6-month contract at Lutron Electronics to lead design on modern SaaS solutions for their field reps, strategic partners, and property end-users – supporting Smart Home and Hospitality ecosystems with SaaS and AI-enabled solutions for post-installation remote monitoring, predictive diagnostics, and energy efficiency analysis.

They needed me to mentor the talented young designers who were hired full-time after earlier internships. But UX design had been kept separate from the maturing Agile development process, so their developers didn’t know how to collaborate with designers on new product features. And new Product Owners were promoted from the engineering ranks without product management or customer research skills, so their product leads didn’t know how to leverage UX for discovering user wants and needs.

My experience and education in design, research, product management, and software engineering became a “Rosetta stone” for coaching cross-functional leaders converging within newly-formed SAFe scrum squadrons. Within 7 months my design team members were confidently working as co-equal colleagues among the squads and guiding incremental design and future development based on the just-in-time customer insights we gathered.
